Derails: Ensuring Safety Through Controlled Derailment

A derail, also known as a derailer, is a device engineered to safeguard your railway infrastructure, personnel, and equipment. It is a failsafe to prevent fouling or compromising rail tracks, thereby minimizing the risk of collisions due to unauthorized train movements or unattended rolling stock.

The effectiveness of a derail lies in its unique operation; it intentionally derails the rolling equipment as it moves over or through the device. While this may sound counterintuitive, given that accidental derailments can damage the equipment and track, requiring significant resources to rectify, the purposeful deployment of derails in controlled environments can prevent much more disastrous outcomes. When the possibility of greater damage, injury, or even fatality is high, a derail acts as a vital line of defense, preventing equipment from moving beyond the set derail point.
