Bulk Plant

A Bulk Plant is a Distribution and Storage Center for gasoline, jet fuel, and diesel. These are also called oil terminals or even tank farms.

Oil terminals receive refined products from railroad tankers, large truck tankers, and tanker ships

The fuels are dispensed and metered into the large storage tanks. These products are then loaded into a smaller tank truck for distribution to gas stations, factories, and manufacturing plants.

Oil depots are usually placed near oil refineries or they are in locations where marine tankers containing products can discharge their cargo to storage tanks.   Some depots are attached to pipelines from which they draw their supplies and depots can also be fed by rail, by barge, and by road tanker.

Bulk plants can be hazardous work environments that require a lot of attention to safety details.  There are a lot of platforms, gangways, and areas that long ground level pipes need to be crossed over.  There is a tremendous need for laddering at oil terminals.

There are constantly moving vehicles in the loading and unloading areas of the terminalOSHA has many regulations regarding worker safety opportunities in oil tank farms
