RollaStep mobile ladder unit at an Arkema odorant facility in Pineville, LA.

This odorant plant has multiple tanks in a large containment berm. Difficult to access the valves at top of the tanks, ladders, and scaffolding wasn’t safe or easily portable and rolling stairs had a large footprint that made it impossible to maneuver in the tight areas around the tank. The challenge was to create a portable access platform that had a small base to maneuver throughout the tank area, but stable when in use by workers. SafeRack’s team of stair and access experts customized a mobile ladder platform that is portable and can be easily positioned to access any of the tanks in the containment area. Using a RollaStep MP (Mobile Platform), SafeRack created a customized wheeled platform by adding a ladder and outriggers that can be extended for stability when in use.

Arkema is very happy with the product… it passed their tests with “flying colors” and it was very easy to use.

Easily Customized Mobile Work Platform

The MP Series adds unparalleled mobility to the workspace of a fixed platform. The powder-coated handrails, full-size 45° rise stair stringer, and standard-sized steps meet OSHA specifications for mobile platforms. The lightweight aluminum construction and 360° swiveling casters make the mobile platform easily maneuverable by a single person.

Highly Mobile
Moving the work platform is a one-person job. The 360° swiveling casters allow the unit to be precisely positioned against even delicate machinery. And the locking casters prevent both swivel and roll, while the soft no-flat tires roll easily over asphalt and gravel.

Distributors of utilities for consumer use are required by law to odorize natural gas and propane/butane to assist in detecting possible leaks and lessening the risk of natural gas explosions. An odorant is a harmless gas called mercaptan is added to natural gas to make it smell like rotten eggs (or sulfur). Gas leaks can’t be detected by smoke alarms and carbon monoxide alarms, so the added odorants are deliberately distinctive and unpleasant so that the presence of gas can be smelled and identified.

This Pineville, La. plant provides natural gas and propane odorants services to municipalities, natural gas pipeline companies. This plant offers odorant product lines for use in both natural gas and propane/butane, including various blends of SPOTLEAK®, ethyl mercaptan (EtSH), and tetrahydrothiophene (THT).

Another Arkema Odorants product, Mercaptan AssassinTM ESD, is used to clean up mercaptan spills, treat empty drums, and remove mercaptan from fabric or clothing. Mercaptan AssassinTM ESD digests mercaptans, proteins, carbohydrates, cellulose, fats, oils, uric salts, and grease. It is particularly effective for foul odor “emergencies” where both instant and long-lasting odor control are desired. Mercaptan AssassinTM ESD is safe to be used around people, domesticated animals, plants, and marine life.
