When LafargeHolcim the nation’s leading cement producer needed to reinstate a bulk loading station that had been out of service for over 10 years, Terminal Manager Chris Grooms knew that the existing prefab gangway was a liability. “I knew that there were huge safety concerns with the old gangway. Fall protection standards have improved exponentially in the past decade and we needed a serious upgrade to meet compliance and keep drivers safe,” explains Grooms.

Lafarge’s Georgetown, South Carolina facility produces type 1 and 2 cement and supports the efforts of the Switzerland based company’s US operations producing fly ash and slag cement products to enhance concrete performance.

“Thanks to our new SAS G4 Gangway from SafeRack, drivers can now access the tops of their trailers and use overhead personal protection equipment (PPE) safely.” – Chris Grooms Manager of Terminals

Using SafeRack’s configurator reps Todd Boland and Travis McCraine were able to collaborate in real-time with Grooms to create a solution. “Thanks to our new SAS G4 Gangway from SafeRack, drivers can now access the tops of their trailers and use overhead personal protection equipment (PPE) safely,” reports Grooms. “As busy as they are, my sales reps were spot on. From concept to installation, the service and timing were outstanding. The quality of fabrication and materials is outstanding. If we prevent one accident, this investment is invaluable.” Earlier this year, SafeRack completed a successful marine gangway installation at Lafarge’s Weirton, West Virginia facility. This customized solution uses a secondary counterweight system to allow for elevation changes due to wakes or river elevation changes. Three MarinaStep products (Self-Adjusting Stair, Stage Series and Truss Series) ensure operators have safe access in a variety of operating conditions.
