Loading Arm Systems

Loading Arms

SafeRack is not only the largest supplier of truck loading platforms and railcar loading systems in North America but also the largest loading arm distributor for both OPW and Emco Wheaton. Loading arm projects go faster and more smoothly with SafeRack because we coordinate with pipe, electrical and civil engineers to help resolve any variables with vehicles. In addition, SafeRack offers the most extensive selection of swivel joints for the most challenging liquid handling applications. Simply put, your railcar loading systems are more productive with SafeRack.

SafeRack’s experienced loading arms experts walk clients through every step of the design process from swing arm style to dimensions and materials. This ensures your loading arm is designed and built to specifications and delivered on schedule, the first time.

Designed for ease of operation and handling, each loading arm creates a faster, safer loading operation. The rugged construction of these loading arms makes downtime and maintenance issues virtually non-existent. Coordinating loading arms with gangways, fall protection, and all the vehicle variables in truck loading racks or railcar loading platforms can be very complicated. SafeRack, however, has the experience, technology, and dedication to safety and productivity to help businesses navigate those complexities. By providing options such as overfill protection, vapor recovery, tracking, and insulation SafeRack helps customers meet any requirement or regulation.

Loading Arm Design Considerations

Loading Arms vs Hoses

Hoses

Loading Arms

  • Hoses require annual pressure tests
  • Are difficult to stow neatly when not in use
  • Can be driven over
  • Can be dropped
  • Are very heavy to use if fitted with a valve at the tanker connection point
  • Cannot be easily heated or have vent/purge valves fitted to it
  • Prone to catastrophic failure
  • Balanced and easy to move throughout the movement envelope
  • Designed not to hit the ground – protecting the valves and couplers
  • Allows for a one-person operation
  • Fitted with manual or actuated liquid valves.
  • Fitted with optional purge/vent facilities
  • Can be moved into position with ease and left hanging in the air while the operator prepares the tanker connection
  • Parked neatly

Loading Arm Design Considerations

Goal: To move bulk product safely and efficiently from the riser to vehicle/vessel.

Applications Best Suited for Arms

  • Ergonomic Issues
  • Safety issues
  • Difficult Riser Location
  • Difficult Hook-up
  • Heavyweight or equipment required (hatch Plate etc.)

Suitability

  • Application Review
  • Fluid review
  • Cost

Advantages

  • Hard Pipe
  • Long Life
  • Ease of operation
  • Safety and Ergonomic

Disadvantages

  • Cost
  • Support Piping

Top Loading Arm Design Considerations

  • Sufficient vertical and horizontal travel
  • Designed for easy operation
    and storage
  • Integrate with new/existing safety access equipment
  • Splash-load, tight-fill, and vapor-recovery configurations

Top loading arm solutions

Bottom Loading Arm Design Considerations

  • Worker safety; the operator remains on the ground, not on top
  • Connections are made more quickly
  • Bottom-loading systems create less turbulence
  • Bottom-loading reduces vapors

Loading Arm Swivel Joints

OPW SwivelJoint 30F

Swivel joints allow axial rotation of piping components relative to each other and remain leak-free under both mechanical and pressure loads. They meet special requirements when used in specific applications (high temperature, cryogenic, toxic, PTFE lined, pigable systems, etc.) By using several swivel joints and elbow combinations, multi-planes of rotation can be accomplished quickly, easily, and efficiently. While different manufacturers use different terminology, the basic styles are basically the same.

Loading Arm Couplings

  • 5-Cam design
  • Easy Alignment
  • Tight connection
  • Fully interlocked – Dual interlocks ensure security
  • High-performance seals
  • Easy maintenance
  • No pins
  • No special tools
  • Can be re-built in minutes
  • Spring Loaded Sleeve – Automatically ‘jumps’ onto API adaptor
